- Winterize sprinkler systems. Before the first hard freeze, shut off the irrigation supply, drain what you can, insulate the backflow preventer and set the controller to off or rain mode. Irrigation help
- Keep up with leaves. Mulch or remove fallen leaves weekly so they don't smother turf heading into dormancy.
- Don't fertilize warm-season grass. Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede and St. Augustine are going dormant, and late nitrogen invites winter injury and disease.
- Watch for winter weeds. If your program calls for a follow-up pre-emergent for annual bluegrass and other winter weeds, now is the time. Spot-treat early broadleaf weeds before they spread. Lawn care programs
- Plant trees and shrubs. Late fall is prime planting time in the Midlands, because warm soil lets roots establish all winter. Landscaping
- Add cool-season color. Pansies and violas planted now will bloom off and on through winter and into spring.
- Soil test before spring. Pick up a kit from your Clemson Extension county office so lime can work over the winter.
- Overseeding window is closing. Ryegrass for winter color on Bermuda should already be in. Tall fescue lawns do best seeded in early fall, so plan for next year.
- Hold off on pruning spring bloomers. Azaleas and other spring-flowering shrubs have already set their buds.
